United States-based Zimbabwean musical producer Solyd The Plug has been making waves across the world, but in South Africa in particular, as he keeps dropping Amapiano hit singles.
The Amapiano genre which originated in South Africa is wildly popular in the Southern African country and is making its way across the world. While the hypnotic music is largely the preserve of South African artists and music producers, Solyd The Plug is holding his own and mixing it up with the very best of South Africa’s music producers.
Solyd The Plug, real name Martin Chikomba, has shown time and again that he can hold his own against the very best Amapiano music producers with his hit singles.
The multi-talented musician announced himself onto the Amapiano scene with the release of Bella Ciao in April this year. The single which blends the hypnotic sounds of Amapiano with the theme song of the Netflix hit television series was an instant hit and achieved wide success across the world. Bella Ciao was playlisted in over 16 countries and has more than 3 million streams across different platforms.
However, despite the success of Bella Ciao, Solyd did not relax and bask in the glory of his hit song. Instead, barely 2 months after releasing Bella Ciao, he followed this up another hit single Press Play which was released in June.
On Press Play, Solyd worked with Tboy Daflame, the producer of Sho Madjozi’s viral hit song John Cena. The Texas-based music producer has been so prolific this year, that he released another three singles in addition to Bella Ciao and Press Play. The latest, Pirates of Mzansi was released just last week.
Solyd who is an all-round music aficionado believes that Zimbabwean music is underrated and under-appreciated internationally and is working on remedying the situation. He is currently putting together a compilation of songs by talented upcoming artists which he hopes will help in opening the doors for Zimbabwe’s talented musicians and music producers.
Said the music producer,
“Zimbabwean music has been underrated for a while now and yet we have artistes which are well-seasoned.
“I will be dropping an album end of this year and my main aim is for the album to open doors for our local artists on the international market,”
Apart from churning out hit singles, Solyd is a music business consultant, a label representative and an artiste manager.
Through his Oak Media Group, he is heavily involved in music publishing and developing artists. He is one of the biggest content providers for Zimbabwean music videos and has distributed over 800 music videos to MTV, TRACE TV and Channel O.
Solyd The Plug is also one of the owners of Mashroom Media through his partnership with ExQ and DJ Tamuka.
